Fire Maintenance Team

Designate 2-3 “Fire Keepers” on Saturday – these should be kids, and the fathers should be willing to assist.

The Keepers are responsible for knowing and regulating based on the following:

  • What goes in the fire? Wood – Keepers and Fathers regulate this
  • What do we keep out? Anything except wood
  • Who puts things in the fire? Keepers and Fathers
  • How do we put a fire out?
    • Scatter, Sprinkle, Stir
    • Scatter things that will burn
    • Sprinkle dirt or water on the fire
    • Stir what is left to mix in the dirt or water

Start, maintain and put out the fire:

  • Gather wood and proportion it for use Fri. AM, Sat. AM, PM, and Sun AM
  • Chop or cut wood – axe and saw provided
  • Build the “nest” or “A” frame stack to start a fire from scratch if needed
    • Tinder, toothpicks, pencils, thumb
      • Find a handful of each of the above sized dry sticks
      • When broken in half, they should break uneven. If they bend or break in a straight line, they are no good to use for fire
  • Try primitive means to start fire first (good one for sons to practice)
    • Striker and cotton, lint, or magnesium flakes
    • “A” frame stack is the best way to start a failsafe fire
  • Build small bonfire for Saturday evening ceremony (just make sure we have ample wood)
  • Keep our fire going as long as we are at camp
  • Get up early enough to get the fire going again in the morning
  • Put out the fire on Sunday before leaving camp
