Games Team

We play games in order to teach lessons about survival in the wilderness, to promote healthy competition, and/or to have fun! We also play basic, non-survival games as well.

The survival aspect of the games may include things related to navigation skills, fire or shelter making, trap setting, hunting or rescue simulation, rope tying, or other various skills. You do not have to be an expert to help with games. You’re there to facilitate and encourage, and if you are not well trained and confident in the specific survival skill, you will be assisted by someone who is.

Non-survival skill games are strictly for fun. You should feel free to facilitate and lead the games. Some of the games will involve the dads as participants.

We divide into 2-4 equal teams. It may be easy to have each of the boys find someone their own height and/or age, have line up in front of that person and then separate them into teams. These teams will remain intact for the whole weekend.

The teams are competing for their flag to be raised on Sunday. The flags are solid in color. The teams are encouraged to decorate their flag with sharpies, which can be as simple as them signing their name, or as complicated as they want it to be.

Healthy competition means that we are not out to destroy the other team as much as we are to make each other better. The root of the word compete means to “strive together”. Thus, competition may mean someone wins in the end, but both sides are better for it regardless.

Games are meant to be fun even if they are challenging. The dads are there to encourage and stay positive about the experience. Not all the kids may want to participate. We want to encourage participation even if something is difficult or intimidating. That goes for all aspects of the weekend. The basic principle is that life is not always perfect, and avoiding uncomfortable or hard situations is not the way we want to approach life.
